Illinois Among 40 States to Allow Credit Card Surcharges

Watch out if you use a credit card to make purchases.Starting yesterday, merchants can now charge you up to a 4% "surcharge" to swipe your card when you make a purchase. On a $500 purchase, that's another $20 you will have to pay. It will be interesting to se which merchants actually begin to assess the fee. You should know that the fee does not apply to transactions completed using a debit card. Also, any merchant that wants to impose the fee has to make sure you know about it first by posting conspicuous signage in the business location, at the check out and on your receipt.
